Fluorocarbon fishing line is quickly becoming favorite of many saltwater anglers. It has many advantages and this makes fluorocarbon line quite popular. It does have a few drawbacks though. If you are able to look past them then I think you will find that using fluorocarbon fishing line can catch some fish.
ADVANTAGES:
Fluorocarbon is a polymer that is basically invisible in water. It comes very close to the refractive index of water, making is extremely hard to see underwater, but visible on the surface. This is a great advantage when fishing for line shy fish. Many have reported catching more fish with fluorocarbon line.
Unlike Monofilament line, fluorocarbon has added density which protects it from abrasions and ultimately line breakage. The added density also causes the line to sink faster causing lures to dive deeper.
Fluorocarbon line doesn't absorb water, so it will not stretch and weaken. This will also make the fluorocarbon line more sensitive than monofilament line.
Fluorocarbon line is not affected by the sun's UV rays. This mean it will not break down as fast allowing you to use it and store it longer.
DISADVANTAGES:
Fluorocarbon fishing line is more expensive than monofilament line.
Fluorocarbon line is stiffer than monofilament line. This can cause trouble when casting if you are not used to this type of line.
Fluorocarbon line requires special attention when tying knots. The line is slick and can cause difficulty.
Overall we personally like fluorocarbon line. To us the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The bottom line is to chose a line that works for you and your fishing needs. Not all line works for every situation. Choose a line that fits your plan.
